As is well documented here, I do so love the gin. It's delicious.
But I was reading another blog today and there were all these comments about people liking dirty martinis. Blech. Why not just go to your fridge and drink the olive juice straight from the source? I cannot CANNOT, I say, condone this practice. First of all, olive juice, yuck. And second of all, GIN IS DELICIOUS. One should not be endeavoring to cover up that wonderful flavor especially not with something so abhorant as OLIVE juice. If you feel the need to, it's probably because you are drinking well gin. Well-anything is pretty gross, but well-gin is certainly not advisable. The only other option is that you're a loon.
In any case, I was thinking lovingly about real martinis - and by real, I mean cold gin with very little vermouth and a couple of olives - which made me think of one of my fondest gin-related memories:
My dear sweet cousin, Chris (pictured left, aren't my cousins so sweet? I can't remember if he's the tallest or the second tallest there, but those two are twins so I can be forgiven for that lapse. Plus, I probably wasn't even ALIVE when this photo was taken, so there.), had just moved into his new apartment that was conveniently just on the other side of Old Town, Alexandria from mine. I had bought him a little martini set as a house warming gift and he quite kindly invited me over to drink some martinis on his new veranda. That day, my friends, was lovely. Cold Sapphire with those yummy tipsy olives on a lovely DC day. Of course I totally got my cousin loaded and I heard all sorts of sordid secrets that he never tells anyone. It is so-far my favorite memory of him.
Well, that and the time at the beach house when he overdosed on mud slides and passed out on the wicker chair that was half his size. Good times. Not that he doesn't have stories that are at least 50 times more embarrassing about me. But then again, who doesn't?
did you ever try the Cascade Mountain Gin?

I did actually, at Vons, this hotel bar/restaurant round here. No way am I going to pass up a gin recommendation, no siree! T'was good - kind of a spring water like taste overlaying the juniper, you know what I mean? But they don't have it at a lot of bars here - or at least not that I've noticed.

Ha! I was just going to ask about Cascade Mountain. I love the stuff. You can get it at the local liquor store down here.
